Commentary
Susan Brundage, director of the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York, editor to Jasper Johns’s publications, and personal friend of Andy Warhol, sits centered in the frame, staring blankly back at the artist. Brundage’s expressionless boredom immediately grabs the viewer’s attention?so much so that the viewer’s eye might even gloss over the two whitewashed figures in the foreground. The silhouette of a women’s face and an outstretched finger enter from opposite sides.
