Commentary
The photographs of Lola Alvarez Bravo are just as entrancing as Yampolsky’s. Yet, historically, the images taken by her husband, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, a prominent photographer, often overshadowed hers. In recent years, though, her works have provided fascinating insight into everyday aspects of Mexican heritage. The Dream of the Poor, which was taken in 1949, is a haunting image of a young boy on a pile of shoes. The implications of this instant are tremendous. It hints at a narrative of hardship and strife all too common for impoverished children.
