Basically, these 59 small horizontal prints [from a miniature Tokaido series] feature a framed margin, a cartouche with the station-name in kaisho (squarish calligraphy), and below it, in two columns, the artist's signature (generally, Gakyojin Hokusai ga), and the name and distance of the following post-stage...With 'Numazu'...we turn to a more everyday theme that was to form something of a trademark for the artist...: two rustic boys are shown walking past, nonchalantly neglecting their task of sweeping up leaves. In the background snow-clad Mt Fuji looms faintly through a clump of pine trees. Within its severe limitations, this may well be one of Hokusai's more perfect prints.
