Commentary
Hiroshige created several series depicting scenes along the Tōkaidō, the route connecting Edo (modern Tokyo) and Kyoto. From one of his later series designed in the early 1850s, this print shows travelers making their way along a similar pine-lined stretch of the Tōkaidō as in Hokusai’s Hodogaya print. Here, the travelers seem less weary and more engaged with each other and with the landscape around them. They may be traveling at a cooler time of year, perhaps early autumn, as is suggested by the bales of rice straw in the fields at the left. In the distance, the snow on Mount Fuji reaches further down the slopes. - Meher McArthur, January 7, 2021
