Object Description
Edo period color woodblock print from Hiroshige's Tokaido Road series. Here Hiroshige depicts an interesting country scene with a wayside teahouse (dechaya) on a road running beside a harvested rice field. A pair of bearers, returning from their transport service with an empty palanquin, stop to have a puff of tobacco. An old woman of the teahouse tends a wood fire under a large kettle suspended from the branch of a gigantic tree with dark foliage. A traveler seated on a bench is waiting for a cup of tea. Behind him is a rudimentary straw shack for the tea vendor. A pair of straw sandals hanging from the ceiling may be for sale to travelers. At the right, a bird perches atop a roadside notice board. The blue-green of the foreground and the blue of the sky are gently graded (bokashi). The volume of smoke rises, at first dark, then gradually becoming pale. The skillful depicting is all due to the abilities and talent of the woodblock carver and printer.
