Object Description
Two young men dressed in festival costumes stand in the foreground. Behind them another fellow raises wooden clappers to make a loud noise. The inset shows a Hie Sanno Festival float topped by a statue of a monkey, the messenger of the Sanno / Mountain King when he communicates with this world. Biannually in July, the Sanno Festival procession wound its way through various neighborhoods around the Edo Castle, eventually appearing before the shogun and his entourage inside the moat. South Denmacho was a merchant area located northeast of the castle and sponsored one of the "flower cart" floats (hanagaruma) used in the Sanno parade. The festival banner at left is mounted next to a bridge.
