On mat, in pencil: Mi31, SC Miller Collection. Kunichika, 'Hanging Souvenier Towels, Teraoka Yuzaemon.' Seals: Right panel - upper right, three in center; Middle panel - three in center; Left panel - three on left edge center. Signed: Kunichika hitsu. Artist's seal: Toshidama. Censor's seal: Aratame and date (Mi-shi) on a single seal.

Object Description
Japanese Meiji period woodblock print with a depiction of three actors on holiday at a Shinto shrine. Dressed in cotton bathrobes, they each hold a cloth towel printed with the name of a restaurant or brothel. Behind them are many more advertisements for local places of amusement. Such a depiction offers devoted kabuki fans a voyeuristic glimpse into the private lives of actors. And yet their individuality is sacrificed for the sake of advertisement.
