Commentary
Dr. Bruce Coats:
This hanging scroll painting of the "Demon Queller" - "Zhong Kui" in Chinese; "Shoki" in Japanese - was transferred from the Denison Library Special Collections to the Williamson Gallery collections on February 23, 2012. No information about provenance has been found. The painting appears to be Japanese, perhaps 18-19th centuries, ink on paper. The signature has not been deciphered (Daizan Shodo ... ?) yet. The condition is "poor" because of abrasions and cracking. However, the Williamson Gallery collections has other images of the "Demon Queller" in Chinese and Japanese paintings and in Japanese prints, so the Gallery is an appropriate place to store this work.
