"The shiny red vessel, rising from its crude base, twists upwards to the casually crafted lip. Powerfully constructed and energetically scored with vertical gashes, Mason's work would mature from this contorted piece into coolly colorful, geometric 'torque' works of the mid-1980s. Such an assertive glaze color was unusual at the time and prefigured Mason's later work."
