"After studying at Otis with Voulkos, John Mason remained in Los Angeles making boldly sculptural ceramics...Closest to Voulkos in his ability to create powerful vessel-based forms with jutting appendages, Mason's Sculpture, 1961, in the Marer Collection illustrates this quality. With its clearly defined and powerfully sculpted sections, the work shows the expressive potential latent in the clay's earthiness."
