Doll Vase, 1968
40 in. x 23 in. x 12 in. (101.6 cm x 58.42 cm x 30.48 cm)
"Doll Vase, 1968, is from Autio's early figurative vessel period. The surface is decorated in a manner reminiscent of both the Fauves and Jean Dubuffet. Autio translated their styles into his own by combining volumetric and structural elements on the surface of a vessel. Here a kewpie-doll form, emerging from the vessel itself, is outlined in painterly black china paint. Color is added to give greater form and liveliness."
(Martha Drexler Lynn)
