Commentary
"Voulkos found energy not in refinement but in rawness, rejecting the aesthetic of smooth, flawless glazes. In Plate, 1957, he applied rust to the plate with epoxy, producing a broken, craggy, surface. In so doing, he again denies the function of the plate as a plate and affirms it as a surface for image making, as he had in his Picasso-esque Plate (Bullfight) [92.1.153]."

Wheel thrown stoneware with a sand glaze, and rust applied to the surface.

Object Description
Round platter on a loop foot, slightly concave, with no lip, decorated with thick patches of brown glaze and thick white sand glaze in the center.
