Commentary
In the final part of this play, the main character, the spirit of the iris flowers at the famous Eight Fold Bridge sings of the poet Ariwara no Narihira (825-880) who composed a poem using the syllables of the flower’s name kakitsubata. After a dance, the spirit kneels and unfolds a fan, observing that it is like the unfurled heart of enlightenment. See: Twelve Plays of the Noh and Ky?gen Theaters, ed. K. Brazell. pp. 63-79.
