Object Description
Color woodblock print with an image of two old men in an interior setting. This print, published after the war, was based on drawings Jacoulet had made in Korea and Manchuria more than a decade earlier. In neither his sketches nor his prints does he indicate the destruction caused by war or the degradation of traditional cultures that had taken place. His images play to an idealized "Orient" that romanticized the past and appealed to the American Occupational Forces and foreign visitors to Japan, who were his primary customers in the late 1940's and 50's. The sumptuous colors and rich patterns were considered an extraordinary tour de force in printing, with some images requiring up to 60 woodblocks to acheive the subtle gradations and fine details.
