Commentary
In this dramatic portrait of the demonic woman, Hanabusa uses both colors and patterns to capture the ferocious aspects of the spurned lover. Gold and silver flames emanate from the figure and seem to consume the stage set. Triangular pattern on the robe and headband suggest a serpent’s skin. And of course, the demonic mask is shown in profile, revealing both teeth and horns.
