Object Description
Image of the thirties actress Ruth St. Denis from her play "The Cobras." Inspired by a snake charmer encountered at a street market on Coney Island, "The Cobras" depicts a street dance set in a noisy bazaar. With green stones glittering like eyes on the index and pinky fingers of each hand, St. Denis used fast-paced arm movements to mimic the coiling, gliding, and darting of two hissing serpents.
