The non-reflective back of this cast-bronze mirror is decorated with various symbols of longevity: a pine tree with bamboo suggesting endurance through the winter; a long-tailed tortoise indicating long life; and two cranes symbolizing marital fidelity. Such an object would be given a bride as part of her trousseau and displayed near the wedding bed for good luck.
