Commentary
The non-reflective back of this cast-bronze mirror is decorated with various symbols of longevity: a pine tree with bamboo suggesting endurance through the winter; a long-tailed tortoise indicating long life; and two cranes symbolizing marital fidelity. Such an object would be given a bride as part of her trousseau and displayed near the wedding bed for good luck.

Object Description
Large Japanese bronze mirror with handle. Design of cranes and turtle with pine tree and bamboo. Vertical inscription on the left.
