Commentary
Old number "L1136/130" in pencil on the backing paper. Listed in the Munthe inventory (p.130) as a "very fine example of a landscape with fields by Wang Hui inscribed and signed by the artist with the date 1700, the period of his maturity (he lived from 1642 to 1717 or 1720), pupil of Wang Kien. He was left handed and dubbed left-hand Wang (Tso Shou Wang). This, in all probability, is an original, though comparitive study is required to establish the fact beyond doubt." The inscription reads: "To draw a picture showing Chao Ao-po's summer residence on a hill, at Lieh Ching-kao at the 9th Moon of the Autumn of Keng-Chen. - Wang-hui."

Marks
There are two lines of calligraphy with two small square red ink seals in the upper left. The calligraphy is prefaced by another red ink seal, this time in oval form. There are two square red ink stamps in the lower left corner.

Medium
Paint in subdued tones of green, pink, white and brown, and black ink, brushed on silk. The scroll has an off-white silk brocade border.

Object Description
Mounted vertical scroll with a landscape in three distinct fields. The top area of the image is mainly of rolling hills. The central image is of flat lands near the water, spotted with trees and houses. The central scene, at the lower edge of the scroll is the most interesting, with detailled houses and trees, and a figure in blue walking along a path.
