Object Description
"Winter" is an example of Symon's most typical subject, treatment, and composition. Forming a series of receding planes, the snow-covered hills slope inward from the edges to the center of the canvas, resulting in a complementary and rhythmic sequence from foreground to background, providing the illusion of deep space. The diagonal arc of the river coming from around the hill reinforces the feeling of distance and rhythm.

Symons makes generous use of color. The rich tints of green, blue and violet give depth and vibrancy are are especially effective in the underpainted areas of shadowed snow. The river, on the verge of freezing, is a deep glassy blue. The rim of the horizon is suffused with the pale mauve glow of a late winter afternoon as the sun disappears. "Winter" shows Symons at his best and most eloquent.
