hand-colored albumen print
A middle-aged man standing next to a small horse dominate the composition of this piece. He stands on the left, dressed in traditional Japanese clothing. To his left (but to the viewer's right) stands the horse, head drooping, ears up. It is loaded down with large bundles. Looking downward, the viewer sees that its rope "shoes" have been tied to its hooves. A thatched wooden building is located behind the pair, with a child looking out of the window. A small group stands to the right, in the background as well.
