Colored ink woodblock print on off-white paper. Oban tate-e.
Meiji period color woodblock print depicting a scene from the "Tales of Genji." Genji first saw the woman who would become his wife when she was a child, standing with her nursemaid on the verandah of a country retreat. The young Murasaki's pet sparrows had just escaped, and the ten year old girl was quite angry over the loss. Genji spied Murasaki from beyond a brushwood fence that enclosed the house and was immediately enchanted by her beauty and vivacity. He later abducted her and secretly raised her to be his ideal wife.
