Ink on Paper
13 in. x 9 1/4 in. (33.02 cm x 23.5 cm)
Genji seal and oval with an inscription in the upper right. Two seals and two text banners in the lower left.
Colored ink woodblock on off-white paper (oban tate-e).
Edo period color woodblock print of a masked man with a lantern ambushing a bijin in a lacquer decorated "kago" in the rain. This fine series by Kunisada II highlighted the talents of the artist. In the rare first edition printings (like this) with lacquer and blind printing, they mark a high-spot in Japanese print production in the 1850's.
