Commentary
As Murasaki looks on, Genji listens to his daughter, the Akashi Princess, read new year's greetings from the Akashi Lady. The letter had been sent attached to a pine bough decorated with baskets of candy. In the background, a plum tree blossoms in the south garden of Rokujo Mansion, where Genji housed his wife Murasaki. The Akashi Lady lived in quiet seclusion off the north garden of Rokujo.

Object Description
Edo period color woodblock print, depicting a couple with their daughter enjoying early spring Plum tree blossoming in the garden, from "The Tale of Gemji." As Murasaki looks on, Genji listens to his daughter, the Akashi Princess, read new year's greetings from the Akashi Lady. The letter had been sent attached to a pine bough decorated with baskets of candy. In the background, a plum tree blossoms in the south garden of Rokujo Mansion, where Genji housed his wife Murasaki. The Akashi Lady lived in quiet seclusion off the north garden of Rokujo.
