Koremichi battles a demon, from "Mirro of Famous Leaders of Japan": The eleventh century warrior Taira No Koremochi was attacked on Mt. Togakushi by the demon Kijo. The story was retold in the Noh play "Momijigari." Yoshitoshi loved the theater, befriending Kabuki actors and studying Noh chanting. Thus, his literary background is quite extensive and he was able to allude to subjects other print artists would not have known. This gives Yoshitoshi's prints a distinctive cultivated quality.
