Object Description
4-tiered inro piece with carved gold lacquer with warriors on horseback in pastoral setting, ojime with painted leaves and fan image, manju netsuke in two parts with seated sage.

The warriors depicted in this inro are likely Taira Atsumori and Kumagai Naozane, dating from the 12th century. Their battle was held on the beach, where they fought on horseback in the water. Alternatively, this could be a depiction of warriors crossing the Uji River. Both events are from the Tale of the Heike. Through the combination of imagery created by this ensemble, the symbolic strength and beauty of the warriors is accompanied by the wisdom and introspection of the sage.
