Commentary
"Voulkos brought a gestural sensibility, inspired by abstract expressionism, to his forms and surfaces. Like the impastoed surfaces of paintings by de Kooning and Kline, Voulkos's incised lines and liquid brushstrokes of Bird Vase, 1958, are traces of his creative thought." (Mary Davis MacNaughton, Revolution in Clay, 1994, pg. 60)
