Edo period color woodblock print with an image of women dressed as butterflies, from the "Tale of Genji." Genji built an enormous mansion at Rokujo where he provided rooms and gardens for his favorite women. Elaborate parties were staged there, and during one spring celebration, Murasaki dressed her attendants as birds and butterflies to deliver flowers to Genji's guests. Here two women carry sprigs of the Japanese rose (yamabuki) while another displays a card with a verse about flowers.
