Commentary
Ayutthaya period, 15th - 16th century, Si Satchanalai ware, north central Thailand, Sukhothai province, Si Satchanalai, Ban Pa Yang kiln.

it is believed these figures were votive offerings for women seeking the birth of a healthy child; figures were bought intact and at time of offering, the head was broken off to release any evil spirits that may be present in figure and by extension the mother-to-be.

Object Description
All four figures are hand-modeled female figures, three holding infants and one holding a mirror against chest. Clay: light gray stoneware with black inclusions. Glaze: celadon, glossy and transparent on three; one has light brown iron glaze overall. Decoration: incised lines used for features of face and hair

Size: A, 3 5/8" high, 2 1/8" wide, 1 1/2" deep; B, 3 7/8" high, 1 7/8" wide, 1 i1/4" deep; C 4 3/4" high plus head 1 9/16", D 3 1/16" high, 1 3/4" wide, 1 5/8" deep.
