It may come as a surprise that Sir Laurence Olivier (1907–1989), the iconic actor of stage and screen, avoided being photographed whenever possible. He first met Childers when "Oh! Calcutta" director Kenneth Tynon invited Childers to work for Sir Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre in London. To this day, no other American photographer has had the opportunity to photograph productions at this revered establishment. Childers references his time spent closely working with Olivier in London as allowing him to take this close, intimately personal photograph. Olivier is humanized in this portrait, his wrinkles and somber appearance indicating the long years of his career, while the expression in his dark eyes hints at the depth of his forceful character.
