Commentary
The History of Joruri, Bunraku theater was compiled by Mizutani Futo. The book contains many of the popular plays. The images are wood block prints.

This 3-volume history of Japanese narrative music provides the background stories for both the puppet theater / bunraku and kabuki theater. Many of these plays are based on historical events or on local legends, and some involve the transformation of animals into humans.
The recitative form of joruri uses ordinary speech sung rhythmically.
