Commentary
A kabuki scene. Kagekiyo (left, played by Ichikawa Gonjuro, 1848-1904) is pulling out a sword hidden in the neck of a lute. Shigetada (center, Ichikawa Kuzo III, 1836-1911) is responding to the threat. Courtesan Akoya (right, played by Onoe) and her servant (Nakamura) are frightened by the sudden incident.

Marks
The work is signed, "Yoshu Chikanobu," and it bears the Toshidama seal.
