Commentary
A set of 25 designs, 23 by Ginko and 2 by Torii Kyosada. Here, "Sashidashi Kantera" translates to "Spotlight attached to a rod." Actor Nakamura Tojuro performs the dance scene in "Musume Dojo-ji," which is a kabuki dance drama. (www.artelino.com)

The series, literally the annual calendar of events in Edo theater," depicts actors in the annual Kaomise performance (in which new actors would be introduced). This print shows an actor in a female role, dancing. At right, a stagehand holds out a candle on a stick to illuminate the dancer's features. (artelino)

Ukiyo-e works are rare that depict the actual audience as well as the kabuki actors. This series is notable, both due to this point and for the glimpses of the green room and views from backstage. (artelino)

Embossed.

The dance-drama “Musume D?j?ji” features as many as nine dances and costume changes in a sequence that tells of the maiden’s developing love, happiness, anger, hatred and fury. Here the actor Nakamura Tomijûrô III (1859-1901) wears a gold colored hat / tateboshi and carries a fan while dancing joyfully beside the D?j?ji bell, early in the performance. Behind the horizontally striped curtain, a chorus sings: “Surrounded by cherry trees, green pines stand out among the flowers. In the fullness of spring, the day is drawing to a close. The sunset bell echoes in the evening glow.”
