Ilse Bing was born in 1899 in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. Bing was mostly self-taught: when on assignment, she would take pictures that satisfied her own artistic interests. Bing worked extensively with a 35mm Leica hand-held camera, gaining the title “Queen of Leica” for the architectural compositions and poignant documentations of daily life she created with it.
In Moraine, Bing may have sought to capture how the pattern of moss and rocks on the ground mimics the billowing spread of clouds in the sky.
