Commentary
Because there was a belief among Buddhists that the end of the world would come at the end of the Heian period (794 - 1185 A.D.), the transcription of Buddhist sutra for the salvation of the souls became very popular among the aristocrats. "Ohmen Ko Sha Kei" in Shitenno temple designated as the National Treasure by the Japanese government, was the representative work of these elegant and opulent sutra transcriptions. Dated 900 A.D. originally, this woodblock version was probably made in the 1960 or 70s.

The artist is unknown.

Gold and silver colored metallic pigments were used in this work. Ten to twenty color blocks were used in the printing of this piece.
