Commentary
This print was made in 2003. There is a curious sense of detachment, or numbness, about Sharpshooter. The camera angle is not directed solely toward the body; instead, the shot encompasses the entire room. Light streams into the space from a cracked window, illuminating a poster of two chimpanzees. This remnant of life before the fighting is almost more shocking and intrusive than the decaying corpse. Lying faceless on the floor, the sharpshooter belongs there as yet one more casualty of war. The poster, with its child-like forms and subject matter, is a jarring reminder of pre-conflict innocence.
Differing from the propagandist nature of some of Baltermants’ other images, Sharpshooter portrays the numerous everyday horrors of war waiting behind each corner.
