Commentary
Illustrated: Leonard Freed: Police Work, pl. 42

"From 1972 to 1979, Freed photographed the New York City Police Department, documenting both the lives of police officers as well as police brutality.

Despite the number of people filling the frame of Man with police officers, the man in question is unmistakably alone. The two police officers stand accusingly over him, effectively cutting him off from the watching children on the right of the image. The lines of the siding on the wall behind him only increase the sense of being caged, as the children, though witnesses, are unable to offer any assistance."
