Commentary
While Freed most notably used his photography as commentary for various social justice movements, he was also fascinated by the everyday lives of those around him. Couple kissing, men playing cards is a seemingly innocent moment in the light of day: away from political struggle or economic strife, the photo’s subjects enjoy an afternoon of leisure. The young couple kisses passionately, but their embrace goes unnoticed by the older men who are entrenched in their card game. Each wrapped up in their respective worlds, the figures demonstrate the complex nature of privacy on city streets.
