Although Shoun Yamamoto studied the traditional Japanese painting "Nihon-ga" and was renowned for his depiction of charming beauties, he made numerous works for book illustrations and woodblock prints in the "Fuzoku-ga" (pictures of customs and manners) genre.

"Children's Play" is considered to be one of Shoun's iconic works. Unlike the children depicted in ukiyo-e up to that time, Shoun created lovable, active and expressive children. These children wear a mixture of traditional Japanese and newly acquired Western-style clothes. The children happily engage in age-old games such as snow fights, horseback riding, and dharuma. The series also introduced children's activities in the various traditional events of the four seasons.
