Commentary
This piece is from a circa 1940 photo of John with some of his siblings on the porch of the house that he grew up in: 1004 Flemings St Greenville North Carolina. From left to right are Freddy, John, Gloria, Warren and Marvin. The 3 brothers pictured are also artists. Outterbridge chose this image because he knew, at this early age, that he had to be an artist — John says he didn’t have a choice. When he looks at this photo, he can see the artist in himself, and his siblings.
