This small mirror would normally have a cord through the turtle-shaped boss so that it could be easily held while applying make up. The overall design of concentric circles dates back to the 8th century, when similarly shaped Chinese Tang Dynasty mirrors were introduced to Japan. The reverse side is polished to give a soft, flattering reflection.
