From the series "One Hundred Kabuki Roles of Ichikawa Danjuro IX" (J. Ichikawa Danjuro engei hyakuban). The kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro IX in the role of Saigo Takamori, the leader of the Satsuma Rebellion.

In this print, Saigo is depicted in traditional Japanese casual clothes although he sports a Western style beard and haircut, so the emphasis is not on Saigo as a reactionary rebel but as a civilian who is loyal to the Emperor and willing to modernize. The print is part of a series begun by Kunichika in 1893, but this design was published after the artist’s death.

Embossed with silver pigment and mica.
