"Kunimasa, using the signature here “Kochoro,” gives us a scene from the famous Chinese war epic “The Water Margin.” The actor Ichikawa Sadanji I (1842-1904) plays the warrior Bushho who slays a tiger with a single blow of his hand. Foreign elements, such as the tiger which is not native to Japan and the Chinese warrior’s colorful clothing, were popular with kabuki audiences."
