Commentary
[Wall text from Art Pix #1: Streetview: A Spectrum in Black and White]
In Andy Warhol’s undated photograph, a sidewalk on the diagonal is punctuated by three pairs of feet. Warhol regards the patterns of small stones and large squares, the fabric that is the stage for much of city life, with a child’s eye view. Feet equates the pavement, which urban residents traverse daily, with its own character. The formal aspects of the strong diagonal are accented by the women’s shoes, white ensconced in black, moving from the left to the right of the image. Motion is suspended, however, by the reflections in a shop window, which suggest passersby see themselves through the lens of commerce. A large burst of sunshine, which appears as a white abstract form in the right-hand corner, contrasts with the detailed and multi-layered display in the shop window.
