Object Description
These two women are dressed in summer kimono with blue water patterns. The kneeling woman holds out an ornament with a straw dragon entwined around a pine branch, a symbol of the “sea god” (umi no kami) associated with the worship of the Shinto deity Hachiman. The standing woman holds a red fan with a white Mt. Fuji, probably a memento from their visit to the Tomigaoka Hachiman Shrine in Fukagawa where a miniature Mt. Fuji had been built in the garden. Several of these earth mounds were located in the outskirts of Edo/Tokyo and were popular places from which to view the real volcano in Suruga southwest of the city.
