Object Description
A woodblock print from Kunisada's series "Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido" featuring kabuki actors. This print features an onnagata (female impersonator), either Ichikawa Monnosuke III (1794-1824) or Ichikawa Monnosuke IV (1804-1862), in the role of the faithful wife Kofuyu in the play "Konoshita Kage Hazama Kassen." She is wearing a purple outer robe with Genji-ko (Tale of Genji chapter symbols) amid maple leaves – suggesting that this character is sensitive to traditional Japanese culture.
