Commentary
"Toshi Sen Ehon": Complete set of Vol. 1 to Vol. 5. Selected five-syllable poems from the T'ang period. Total of 42 single-page and 13 double-page illustrations. This compilation of Chinese poems, "T'ang shih hsuan" (Selected Tang Poems; To Shi Sen in Japanese) was published by a Ming dynasty scholar, Li P'an-lung (1514-70). The poem book was very popular in China and Japan, where many illustrated versions were created. Signature "Zen Hokusai I'itsu hitsu" is printed as the artist on the front page of Vol. 1. Dated 1833. The books were constructed in the traditional "fukurotoji" manner. The illustrations are in black-and-white.
