Burgundy satin embroidered with couched gold threads and silk.

Object Description
A wall hanging of burgundy satin with extensive gold couching.

A large shou character couched with gold metal-wrapped thread dominates the center of the piece. Eight Daoist immortals, who are associated with longevity and immortality, flank the center character. These figures are the only elements of the piece including embroidered multi-colored silk floss in variations of satin stitch in addition to gold couching. Elements of the Eight Precious Things of Buddhism and other auspicious symbols (bats, dragons, swastikas, ruyi scepter) surround the Daoist immortals. Stylized clouds are interspersed creating a celestial scene. A flower motif rendered in couched gold-wrapped threads frames the piece.

The Daoist and Buddhist elements that cover the panel indicate the popular use of religious symbols as ornamental elements. These elements are most likely used as additional symbols of longevity and good fortune.
