Object Description
Showa period color woodblock print depicting the actor Ichikawa Danjuro in a role from "Kanjincho." Kanjincho, possibly the most popular kabuki play, covers the exploits of the 12th century warriors Benkei and Minamoto no Yoshitsune as they flee from the capital. This text of this play, first written and acted by Danjuro I in 1702, did not survive beyond the basic premise and title Kanjincho “The Subscription List.” It was rewritten in 1840 by Danjuro VII and still performed today. The image is a depiction of Benkei reading the subscription list mentioned in the title.
