by Torii Kiyosada (1844-1901) & Kiyotada VII (active 1875-1941) 1896

Written in 1727 for Danjuro II, the original plot of Oshimodoshi has been lost, and the play became a way for Ichikawa family actors to swagger and strut while carrying oversized weapons and vanquishing demons. This popular stage hero, played here by Danjuro IX, appears in flamboyant costumes with exaggerated makeup.

Signed: 'Tadakiyo' Seal: Red square 'tadakiyo'.

Colored ink woodblock on off-white paper. Oban tate-e.
