The court lady Sei Shonagon served Empress Sadako (died 1000) as a literary companion, helping to set high standards in the poetry contests that were frequently held. Morikuni's imaginary portrait is accompanied by a short biography of the poet and selections of her verse, and the whole book is a chronological review of Japan's great literary figures. The book consists of 29 pages.
